Why can’t people send me Facebook Messages?

Updated 9/9/15: this newer post may be helpful with more up-to-date Facebook settings –  I can’t message someone on Facebook

Not able to receive Facebook Messages from non-friends

I am in several groups on Facebook, and sometimes when conversations from those groups need to be taken OFF of the group wall into a private message, people who aren’t my friends weren’t able to message me.

This puzzled me since my Facebook privacy and security settings are nearly all set to make me very visible, very public.

I think I found the solution, a relatively simple fix, actually, and I’d like to know if it helps some other people as well.

Change the Privacy Setting of your Email to Receive Facebook Messages

From your Facebook News Feed, select “Edit Profile” on the top left corner under the Facebook logo:

Edit Facebook Profile

Then scroll down in your Profile (“About” section) and find “Contact Information” and click the “Edit” button:

Edit Contact Info on Facebook

Locate your facebook.com email address, and select the drop-down arrow on that line (it will be next to a padlock, friend, or globe icon, depending on your current setting).  Select the “Public” option to set the facebook.com email.

make facebook email public

Once that is completed, be sure to click “Save” at the bottom of the editing screen.

SAVE Contact Info on Facebook

This should enable you to receive Facebook messages from people who aren’t your friends. A surprisingly simple fix, but not easy to find (I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while!).

You can select the visibility/privacy of all of the email addresses connected to your Facebook account in the same way.

NOTE: [updated 12-26-13] If you are considered a minor by Facebook because of your age, you will NOT be able to set your facebook.com email address to Public. I don’t know what the standards are for every country, though I believe if you are under 18 years old, you are ‘under age’.  Facebook puts this safeguard in place as an extra level of security/privacy for under age users.

Have you had the issue of not being able to receive Facebook messages from people other than your friends? Let me know if this fix helps you!

But,, When i tried to cahnge the facebook email to Public…. The public option does’nt appear….
I dont know why is this but i cant find the public option…. the only options appearing are just friends..friends of friends,,, only me and custom.. but not public……….
    Please help

    • Two quick questions for you, Saad, just to help clarify so I can see if there’s a solution.

How old are you? If you are a considered a minor then Facebook will not allow you to set the Facebook.com email address on your Facebook profile to Public.

Also, can you check your Privacy settings (https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=privacy) and let me know what those settings are? I suspect that if you are not a minor, the issue of not being able to set your Facebook email to Public has to do with these privacy settings, but I’ve not been able to reproduce the issue on my end no matter how I change these settings.
