Social Media Unjumbled
As I mentioned in “Off the Wall?“, Social Media really is kind of new and different, maybe even weird, and for most people, unfamiliar territory. But we cannot deny that social media is a force to be reckoned with, as a huge source for potential customers, clients and donors.
So let’s take the unfamiliarity factor out of the equation, by un-jumbling what social media is all about!
What is Social Media?
Let’s break it up, and look at the pieces, to start.
Social: being social implies interaction between people or groups of people.
Media: the means by which we communicate, whether that be newspaper, television, radio, and now the internet.
According to Wikipedia, “Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.”
Newspaper, television and radio are means of one-way communication. The internet has allowed users to post and share their personal communications in new and interactive ways, so that it’s no longer one-way communication.
Social media consists of websites where users can share information, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, StumbleUpon, and Digg, just to name a few.
I’ve pulled together 5 short and fun videos to help unjumble (explain) social media a bit more. They are worth taking a few minutes to watch – they explain things much better than I can. I think they are helpful to better illustrate the details of social media (and I think you’ll like them!)
The videos are: 1) “Social Media In Plain English”, 2) “What is Facebook?”, 3) ”Twitter in Plain English”, 4) “What is LinkedIn” , and 5) “So What is YouTube Anyway?”
(if you can’t see the video playlist here,
