Social Media in Emergencies Survey: What does it tell Alberta business owners?

This week, the “Social Media in Emergencies Survey”, conducted for the Canadian Red Cross, was released. The survey shows that Albertans are more likely to use social media during an emergency than other provinces. “70 per cent of Alberta residents say they would sign up for electronic alerts in times of official warnings, compared to 50 per cent of the rest of the Canadians.”

Martin Pollard, an Alberta manager for disaster management with the Red Cross, said, “[Social Media] really helps info get disseminated to the most vulnerable people at the most vulnerable time… It is transforming how people can stay informed and stay safe.” Pollard also stated, “Not only can it be used, but it can be used in a very useful fashion.” Read more >>

Schedule Posts in Advance on your Facebook Page

Aug 29, 2012   //   by Raylene   //   Blog, Facebook, Social Media for Business  //  Comments Off on Schedule Posts in Advance on your Facebook Page

Facebook now has a feature that lets PAGES schedule posts in advance!  Many of us were using Hootsuite or other 3rd-party applications for scheduling, but now we can do it all right within Facebook on your Facebook Pages. (I still use Hootsuite for Twitter and TONS of other stuff.)

Here’s a quick series of screenshots to show you how to schedule Posts on your Facebook Page ahead of time.

You can schedule any post you want to make on your page by including your update in the Status box, and even adding a photo/video, like you normally would. Instead of clicking POST, click on the CLOCK at the bottom left of the status update box:

Click the Clock in the bottom left to schedule

Then you select your Year, Month, Day, Hour and Minute, and click “Schedule”: Read more >>

Social Media is a pain in the &$%#!!

Aug 21, 2012   //   by Raylene   //   Blog, Social Media for Business  //  Comments Off on Social Media is a pain in the &$%#!!

Quite possibly the most common thing I hear from business owners: “Social Media is a pain in the &$%#!!”

Twitter SwearingI heard it said today, in fact!

Business people are saying this because:
#1 – they know they need to be on social media;
#2 – they don’t have the time to be on social media;
#3 – they don’t know what to do on social media;
#4 – and so they are frustrated by and about social media.

Social media isn’t YOUR business (for most of you). You are running your own landscaping, home building, real estate, bookstore, or coffee shop kind of business. Social media shouldn’t be your area of expertise if it isn’t your business. Social media should be an avenue you employ to highlight your business activities and to increase the visibility of your business.

Do you write your own radio ads? Do you record your TV spots? Do you make all the copies of your business brochures yourself? What about your legal documents – do you take care of all your legal issues on your own? (I’m guessing the answer is NO to most of these questions.)

Businesses of all sizes hire others to do some of their business work for them (even if it’s just going to Staples to have your copies made).

A lawyer will know better how to take care of any legalities of a business than you do; a marketing professional will be able to help you plan your radio and TV and newspaper ads, and some kind of production company will take care of actually putting those ads into play. Read more >>
